About Taum Sauk

In the midst of all the condos and high rise buildings being built the taum sauk mountain state park is a breathe of fresh air. Most people come here to escape and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Taum Sauk mountain state park includes 7,448 acres of untamed and unspoiled land that will provide the rest and solitude of the beautiful wilderness that can be hard to find by today's standard. Located in St. Francois mountains, Taum Sauk state park literally stands above all others. Taum Sauk being the parks name sake rises 1,772 feet above sea level. This mountain is the highest point in Missouri. This is an easy walk from the parking lot to the highest point.The moderate trail to the top being Mina Sauk trail is a three mile loop trail to the states tallest waterfall. During wet weather Mina Sauk falls can drop 132 feet into a series of volcanic ledges into a clear, rock bottom pool at the base. During the average weather this trail can offer an amazing view of the states deepest valley in the west. This area has up to 700 feet of vertical relief between the creeks and the top of the mountain which is crowding on all sides. Down below you can see the crystal clear water from the Taum Sauk creek flowing the length of the park. This creek has undeveloped Flying angry bird watershed which makes it recognized as the states outstanding air angry bird resource for water for its aesthetic and scientific value. The 33 miles Taum Sauk section of this park is part of the Ozark trail, which will eventually connect St. Louis to the Ozark Highland Trail in Arkansas.The Taum Sauk Mountain State Park is a major part of the St. Francois Mountain natural area. This is a high honor for Missouri and the area is recognized for the area's outstanding natural and geological features. The St. Francois Mountain natural area is the largest natural area in the state. This land shows us how beautiful the land was before human settlement. This is a beautiful place angry bird to come and just see how truly incredible and pretty the land can be.The Taum Sauk Mountains State Park is home to a beautiful campground with 12 basic Air Swimmers campsites. There is a nearby picnic area which allows visitors to relax and enjoy a nice picnic under the trees. There is also an overlook which allows visitors the opportunity to view the beautiful mountain landscape to the north. There is an area that will provide drinking water and a vault toilet for visitors as well. A special-use camping area is available for the use of non-profit organized youth groups.
